It’s a Big Dill: Exploring Michigan’s Best Pickle Attractions

Long before Michigan was known as the nation’s automotive capital, it led a different industry — one that has only grown stronger over time: Pickles. In 2016, the value of Michigan’s pickling cucumber crop reached $47 million, signifying its great importance in the state’s agricultural economy.

In fact, Michigan ranks #1 in the nation for production of pickling cucumbers. In 2023, the Great Lakes State planted 29,000 acres of cucumbers which were valued at nearly $59 million, according to the USDA.

According to Detroit pickle manufacturer Larry Topor, Michigan exists at the center of what he calls the ‘PickleVerse’ — a vast network of growers, processors, and sellers dedicated to producing the perfect pickle.

Michigan’s deep pickle roots go back to the early 20th century when Eastern European immigrants brought their preservation traditions to the Midwest. By 1907, thousands of acres of pickling cucumbers were being grown across the state, processed in large salt brine vats, and shipped to factories in Detroit for sorting.

This legacy continues today with longstanding pickle companies and new pickle-inspired businesses popping up across the state.

And if you’re a pickle lover, Michigan has a surprising number of destinations for all things briny and delicious. From festivals celebrating the beloved cucumber to quirky roadside stops and pickle-inspired menus, there’s no shortage of ways to indulge your love for pickles in the Great Lakes State.

Here’s a look at some of Michigan’s best pickle attractions that are kind of a big dill…
