In the 1880s, Dubuque was known as an hour and a half town — at noon, everything shut down for an hour and a half for dinner. In 1882, a local banker named J.K. Graves got tired of the long, hot commute from his home on the bluff to his bank downtown.
His solution? Build a funicular railway, reminiscent of European incline railways, particularly the cable cars used in the Swiss Alps. Genius, right? What started as a personal convenience turned into a public treasure.
His dream became reality in July 1882 when the cable car operated for the first time. It became so popular with neighbors that Graves eventually charged them 5 cents a ride to use it.
The elevator has burned and been rebuilt several times throughout its history, most recently in 1977 when the cable cars that travel on either side were completely rebuilt.
